Former President Bill Clinton was at AU

William Jefferson Clinton was the first Democratic president in six decades to be elected twice – first in 1992 and then in 1996. Under his leadership, the country enjoyed the strongest economy in a generation and the longest economic expansion in U.S. history, including the creation of more than 22 million jobs.

After leaving the White House, President Clinton established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the mission to strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. Today the Foundation has staff and volunteers around the world working to improve lives through several initiatives, including the Clinton Health Access Initiative (formerly the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative), which is helping 4 million people living with HIV/AIDS access lifesaving drugs.

Other initiatives — including the Clinton Climate Initiative, the Clinton Development Initiative, and the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative — are applying a business-oriented approach worldwide to fight climate change and develop sustainable economic growth in Africa and Latin America. As a project of the Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative brings together global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. In the U.S., the Foundation is working to combat the alarming rise in childhood obesity through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and is helping individuals and families succeed and small businesses grow.

In addition his Foundation work, President Clinton has joined with former President George H.W. Bush three times – after the 2004 tsunami in South Asia, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hurricane Ike in 2008 – to help raise money for recovery efforts and served as the U.N. Envoy for Tsunami Recovery. Building on his longstanding commitment to Haiti as President and through his Foundation, President Clinton was named U.N. Special Envoy for Haiti in 2009 to assist the government and the people of Haiti as they “build back better” after a series of hurricanes battered the country in 2008. Following this year’s devastating earthquake, President Clinton dedicated Clinton Foundation resources to help with immediate and long term relief and assistance, and at the request of President Obama, joined with President George W. Bush to establish the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, which supports highly effective organizations on the ground in long term rebuilding efforts. Additionally, President Clinton serves as co-chair of the Interim Haiti Recovery Mission with Prime Minister Bellerive.

President Clinton was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas. He and his wife Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have one daughter, Chelsea, and live in Chappaqua, New York.

Maya Angelou Public Charter School

Project Description:            Volunteers will repaint the Teacher’s Lounge, organize donated books in the library, and stencil room numbers. Volunteers will also participate in a residential fire safety project and help with paint small murals in offices.

Community Impact:             A newly painted teacher’s lounge will provide a relaxing space for lesson planning. Organizing donated books will improve student access and encourage them to read. Small murals of college logos hung in the college preparation office will provided a visual focus for students and serve as a reminder of higher education opportunities. Finally, a mural of Muhammad Ali will encourage commitment to athletic prowess and social justice.

Ms. Habeck is an Associate Professor of Strategic Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS. Her geographic expertise is in Western Europe, Middle East, Iraq, and Russia. She has held appointment at the National Security Council; served as associate professor of history at Yale University; coordinated the Yale Russian Archive Project to facilitate access to documents in the former Soviet archives; Ph.D., history, Yale University.

Mr. Hughes is a Career Advisor at American University. Chris has experience with advising graduate students how to take their knowledge to the next level. He has a wide-range of contacts in the federal, state, and local levels. Chris served as Program Manager for the Campaign for African American Achievement at the Urban League of Pittsburgh and Counselor for the Penn State University Educational Talent Search Program, a federal TRIO program.

Jennifer Carignan is a Career Advisor at American University. Jennifer served as an associate manager for research at the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service where she managed high-profile research studies on federal human capital challenges, including the recruitment and hiring of talented Americans into government positions.

What will we be doing?

Invasive species removal is important: invasive species typically choke out native species, providing little benefit to other plants and animals and thus lowering the biodiversity of ecosystems. The group will be cutting invasive and exotic plant species. Those include trees, bushes and vines. and taking some plant debris out of the park. The group will be working with tools (clippers and pruners)  The park
provides tools and gloves.

What should we wear?

We will be working outside. So, wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, hats,
jacket, sturdy shoes (sneakers or boots).  Dress in layers, and
preferentially light colors. Bring water and snacks.

Other Info

Students can get their via carpool from AU. The cleanup will consist of removing invasive plant species and debris from 10 to noon, followed by a cookout to reward volunteers for their hard work.

BE A MENTOR!!

The Young Leaders Program connect college students to lead Girl Scout troops for six weeks for girls who live in low-income, challenged parts of the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County.

Over the course of six weeks girls experience Girl Scouting traditions, while young leaders help them build courage, confidence and character, and make the world a better place. Leaders get the chance to experience empowerment, leadership opportunities and an opportunity to make a difference.

We provide you with all the training, curriculum and supplies needed, we just need volunteers to lead the activities and be a mentor and role model to the girls during the six weeks. Previous Girl Scout experience is a bonus, but by no means required.
